Uldis Reimanis, Head of the Transport Accident and Incident Investigation Bureau, emphasizes: “Accidents during holidays can occur while swimming carelessly, using inflatable boats, or simply not paying attention near railway tracks. Protect yourselves and others!”

“Latvia ranks highly in Europe regarding drowning and road traffic fatalities—approximately 120-125 people drown annually, and the number of road fatalities is also significant. The Transport Accident and Incident Investigation Bureau's main function involves investigating serious accidents occurring on or near railways, water, and in aviation. Given that festive periods often encourage reckless behavior, we urge everyone to be cautious around railway tracks, when using watercraft, and while swimming,” states Uldis Reimanis.

“It is said that seemingly small mistakes can lead to major accidents, and this is proven repeatedly in practice—accidents during festive times frequently result from careless swimming, using even a simple inflatable boat, or inattentiveness near railway tracks. Protect yourselves and others!” continues Reimanis.

Near water – joyful but safe!

As summer continues and holidays approach, the Transport Accident and Incident Investigation Bureau urges the public to carefully consider their leisure activities around water and adhere to all safety measures.

During warm weather, increasing numbers of people enjoy lakes, rivers, and the sea, using various watercraft such as recreational boats, paddle boats, SUP boards, jet skis, and others.

To maximize safety for yourself and others, the Bureau recommends observing the following minimum safety requirements:

  • Always wear personal protective equipment, especially life jackets, regardless of swimming or boating skills.

  • Never engage in water activities under the influence of alcohol or other intoxicants.

  • Avoid reckless, impulsive, or show-off behaviors that can jeopardize your safety and the safety of others.

  • Comply with water traffic regulations, be careful in coastal areas and public swimming zones.

  • Do not overload watercraft and ensure they are technically sound and suitable for your chosen activities.

Increased accident risk near railways during Midsummer

Numerous dangerous incidents near railway tracks are recorded annually, particularly during holidays. Many incidents and accidents are linked directly to carelessness near tracks or intoxication, leading individuals to cross tracks recklessly or even deciding to "rest" on the tracks.

Safety recommendations from the Bureau for celebrating safely near railway tracks:

  • Pay close attention to road signs and traffic signals near railway tracks. Do not rely solely on hearing an approaching train—always verify the traffic signals. Trains can approach unnoticed, so never cross tracks against lights or signals.

  • Never cross railway tracks outside of designated crossings. Attempting to take shortcuts or walking casually along tracks can be fatal—trains move quickly and cannot stop instantly.

  • Avoid alcohol consumption near railway areas, and never approach tracks while intoxicated.

  • Always follow safe practices when driving across railway crossings.

  • Remember, railways operate even during holiday nights!

The Transport Accident and Incident Investigation Bureau reminds everyone: We all contribute to safe and positively memorable celebrations!
