The Transport Accident and Incident Investigation Bureau was established to conduct independent investigations of railway, aviation, and maritime accidents and incidents in accordance with international regulations. As a result, the Bureau maintains extensive cooperation with various organizations both within Latvia and internationally.
Equivalent investigative bodies have been established in other European Union Member States, and accident investigation bureaus across Europe and worldwide cooperate by sharing information, experience, and methodologies in the investigation of accidents occurring on railways, in the air, or at sea.
This collaboration enhances understanding of the causes that may lead to accidents and helps identify potential safety deficiencies across different modes of transport. During the investigation process, international standards and protocols—such as those of the European Union and the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) - are applied to ensure objectivity and consistency in investigative methods.
Transport accident investigation bureaus also cooperate with law enforcement authorities to ensure compliance with international legal standards and to uphold principles of justice and safety.
Both national and international cooperation not only improve the quality and efficiency of investigations but also help raise public awareness about safety, facilitate the adoption of new technologies, and promote innovative approaches to enhancing transport safety.
