On 19–20 May 2026, an international peer review in the field of transport accident investigation took place at the Transport Accident and Incident Investigation Bureau (TAIIB).

The review process involved an expert from the European Union Agency for Railways, as well as representatives of investigation authorities from Romania, Germany, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Spain and Greece. The purpose of the visit was to assess the independence and activities of the Investigation Bureau, identify examples of good practice and opportunities for development, and promote international exchange of experience.

Over the course of two days, discussions were held on the organisation of the investigation process, the Bureau’s capacity, working methods and future development directions. Participants were introduced to the peer review procedure and its objectives, while representatives of the Investigation Bureau presented the organisation’s structure, previous experience, examples of good practice, challenges and future plans.

During the visit, foreign experts discussed issues identified in the previously prepared questionnaires and presentations. They also assessed the independence of the Investigation Bureau, met with staff members and reviewed the equipment available to investigators. Particular attention was devoted to the analysis of real accident investigation processes, including the review of specific final investigation reports and discussions on the approach, methodology and development of conclusions.

The purpose of international peer reviews of investigation authorities is to strengthen the quality of independent accident investigations, promote a safety culture and support a common approach at European level, based on the exchange of experience and mutual professional assessment.

The draft final report prepared by the experts is expected after 20 June and will be submitted to TAIIB for comments. The final report, including observations and recommendations, is expected to be available at the end of July this year. It will serve as a basis for the further development of TAIIB.
