On 5 May 2026 at 21:02, an accident involving diesel train No. 814 (trainset DR1A No. 210.3) occurred on the railway section between Nīcgale and Vabole stations (362 km, picket 10). According to the initial information available, a fire broke out in the diesel engine compartment of the train.
The train was immediately stopped at the relevant section, and at 21:11 the State Fire and Rescue Service was alerted. According to information provided by the emergency services, the fire was fully extinguished at 22:30, while the railway section was reopened for traffic at 23:32.
As a result of the incident, train No. 814 was cancelled on the Nīcgale–Daugavpils section, and the movement of other trains was also affected. Train No. 4992 was delayed for 3 minutes at Sergunta station and for 2 hours and 9 minutes at Nīcgale station.
The Transport Accident and Incident Investigation Bureau has initiated a preliminary assessment of the accident in order to determine the circumstances and causes of the occurrence. During the assessment, the train’s operational and technical documentation, the timeliness and coordination of the emergency services’ response, as well as the performance of the diesel train’s automatic fire suppression system will be analysed.
An assessment of possible technical causes will also be carried out, including the technical condition of the diesel engine and related systems, in order to identify factors that may have contributed to the outbreak and development of the fire.
The purpose of the assessment is to obtain objective information about the occurrence, identify safety risks and, where necessary, develop recommendations to prevent similar incidents in the future.
